Laptop connected to Wifi but no internet connection

I am using an HP Pavilion dv7 with a Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230 network adapter trying to connect to the wifi router on campus from my dorm room. The routers are placed in the common areas, so I do not receive a very strong signal in my room, but it works good enough for my Android phone to connect just fine and have a reasonable speed. My laptop on the other hand, which works fine in the common areas with good signals, at times struggles to get internet. I have episodes where I can connect just fine and receive sufficient speed, but then at other times, I connect to the wifi but I cannot connect to the internet. I click Diagnose on the Wireless Network Connection Status, which runs and claims to find an error which is fixed by resetting the wireless adapter. Rarely does this actually fix the problem though. I am curious as to what could be causing this spotty internet connection with my laptop, when my phone always works just fine. Could it be something with HP's default WLAN manager? I read something about updating to Intel's wifi manager but I could not get the update to work with my Windows 7 64-bit OS. Does anyone have some insight that can make my laptop connect better?
