Greetings All,
Incensed by Time Warner Cables sleazy tactic of suddenly charging a monthly rental fee for their modem, I bought my own (from TWCs recommended list----a Motorola Docsys 3.0) and now only three of the five laptops in my house can access the internet, but my two cannot. My router is Linksys WRT310N V2, which Ive had for a number of years. A macbook pro, an apple and a Toshiba can get on the internet but my two old dell laptops cannot. They both only show one of those small yellow rectangle icons with a black exclamation point in the middle when I hover over the wireless network icon in the horizontal tray at the bottom of my screen.
My network information displays the wireless connection established with excellent signal strength but no connection (signified by a red X) between the network and the internet. I had the same problem with a previous Docsis 3.0 modem and thought the problem was due to the modem. I replaced that modem with exactly the same type and the problem persisted, proving the problem is with my computers. I rebooted the modem, and router countless times, so that also isnt the issue. I have not done a router factory reset and would not do that without a tech support person to walk me through it because its too complicated. Ive done it with tech support people in the past and there is no way I would trust myself to do it successfully on my own, or from written instructions. And I can't get tech support because the modem I bought from ebay is not under warranty and Time Warner of course is of limited usefulness in this situation, especially since it's not their modem.
When I try to access websites, I get the message Server not found with that black exclamation point inside of the yellow triangle. The message also says Firefox cant find the server at www.google.com check the address for typing errors If you are unable to load any pages check your computers network connect and finally, if your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that firefox is permitted to access the web.
I thought the problem might have something to do with my anti malware programs --- either ESET NOD 32 and/or Malwarebytes, but I temporarily disabled the one laptop that only had ESET and tried to get online with no success, same problem continued.
My operating systems are Windows 7. Tried to copy and paste results for IPCONFIG/ALL, but couldn't figure out how.
Something else strange Im seeing which should be totally unrelated---Im only able to connect using my Clear mobile hotspot, which shows Im connected to, Clearspot _bXXXX Internet access but it also simultaneously shows Unidentified Network internet access, directly under the clearspot. This is something new that has just popped up with this whole modem problem, so I thought Id throw that piece of information in.
Finally, I would pay for walk thru tech support if someone has a recommendation. For reasons I won't go into, it's taken me literally all day to get this post to work and I cannot sacrifice my entire time to troubleshooting. I'd much rather pay a trusted, professional outfit rather than an interminable back and forth of advice and experimentation Thank you all in advance for any suggestions.
Regards,
