No internet connection

A friend of mine, who is a distance away and not technically proficient cannot connect to the internet. She has Windows Vista. She says she gets a message that her computer is looking for a wireless connection. The last thing she remembers doing that might have some affect (but probably not) is that a smart phone was connected to the usb port for charging.

Any first steps to begin to diagnose this?
