I am currently staying in a hotel on business and have my laptop computer with me. The hotels is not one of a major chain of hotels and the Internet access is via a Cat 6 cable and Wi-Fi. I was using the Cat 6 cable because I don't believe that Wi Fi connections are very secure. All was going well until last Sunday when all of a sudden my compute lost Internet access. I checked, and access via the Cat 6 cable was no longer available but access via Wi Fi was available. I did not want to, but I connected to the Internet via the Wi Fi for a short period of time in order to check e-mails.
I later found out that the router for my Internet is actually in a guest room here in the hotel and that someone had moved into that room. After learning this, I no longer tried to access the Internet via Wi Fi. Yesterday, the owner of the hotel installed a Cat 6 cable from the hotel's office directly to my room, and I am using the Cat 6 cable to access the Internet.
I have four questions; 1: Can someone hack a Cat 6 cable; 2; How easy would it have been for the person with the router in his/her room to hack into my computer; Is there a way for me to tell if someone did hack into my computer; and 4: Are there programs available that would tell me if someone is trying or has hacked into my computer via Wi Fi or cable? I should mention that I got a message from Google that it appeared that someone tried to access my Gmail using my password but that could actually have been me when I tried to use COMODO's Trust Connect to access the Internet when my computer did not have Cat 6 access and I was using Wi Fi.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies and suggestions.
