This is the second time I've had an issue with a Desktop switch. I have 1 PC for home use, 1 for work, and 1 for guests. Each one is supposed to be under a separate IP as I login to confidential business files via my work PC and the other two are for screwing around.
I used a D-Link DGS-1008G desktop switch for the two PC's, and it worked part of the time but then every week or two it would stop working and I would have to re-plug in everything and hope for it to get going again. I'd spend an average of ~2 hours/month doing diagnostic work and plugging in CAT5 cables till I realized that this model is a pos and I'm wasting too much time maintaining it. I will add that I have contacted my ISP several times and they said that everything is fine on their end, and when I connect the internet directly without using the switch it works perfectly fine (obviously).
Then I gave the D-Link DGS-1005G desktop switch a go, and so far it's run two PC's just fine. When I add-in a 3rd it only works part of the time. It was working great this morning now all of a sudden the entire day it won't work at all - i tried plugging in the internet directly to the 3rd computer and it worked great obviously.
Is this standard for desktop switches? I can understand if it was never working, then that would mean that I didn't plug it in correctly or it was a broken model but why is it working for part of the time but not others? Is there a model out there that actually works? If I have to pay $1,000 that's fine, I don't really care but frankly I'm tired of spending 3-4 hours a month doing tedious diagnostic work, its very draining. What are my options here?
