Wi-fi problems on XP

First a big thank you in anticipation of any help (and patience) I may receive as I know this question has been posted many times on many forums as I have been attempting to find a solution for the last 3 weeks to save asking it again. I have had no success but this site appears to be the most helpful so I am asking here.

I have moved to a new home address and the previous owner kindly left behind their router for me. My desktop, tablet, phones, old netbook (running XP) and TV all connected to the wireless network without a hitch but my old faithful Toshiba Equium which has been everywhere with me over the last 8 years refuses to connect but it connects fine with an ethernet cable as I sit here typing this. It runs XP and I really need this laptop to connect wirelessly if at all possible. I even bought a wifi dongle from Amazon to see if that would help but it has the same issues.

I have used computers for over 20 years but am not technically minded so will need to have things explained and will be delighted to supply the necessary information that may solve my problem.

Many thanks, Jon.
