I've found an interesting solution to a problem I've been facing the past few days.
Recently, I was experiencing generic slow internet issues, including the inability to hold a connection to VoIP programs, IRC & messaging clients, etc. To test my speeds, I started a 1GB test download from this site. Interestingly, upon starting the download, I found that my network connection ceased to be slow while I was downloading the file. I confirmed this by doing multiple tests with Chrome downloads and torrent downloads. Every time the download stopped, my connection became slow again.
My conclusion is that, as long as I'm maintaining a bit of network utilization, my connection works fine. I'm currently downloading a torrent at a capped 100kb/s, and as a reuslt, my connection is perfect.
My question is - why? Why does having a small portion of my network utilized solve a sluggish connection?
Thanks for reading.
(I'm running on a wired connection. Comcast is my ISP. My router is a Netgear WGR614v9. I'm not using an anti-virus.)
