Wanto to create an access point

First, I am not a techie about networking - but I am not completely clueless either (Just a FYI :) )

I purchased a new ASUS RTN66U Wireless N9000 Gigabit Router. I didn't have enough ports for my MicroCell and printer so I added a cisco Linksys SE1500 which I already had. I have Comcast Xfinity internet and am using a Zoom Modem.

I am wondering if I can use my old SBG6580 cable modem/router as a wireless Access Point upstairs in my son's room to get better coverage upstairs where the signal is weak. My son's computer is hard-wired via ethernet to the internet connection. He is a gamer and has an Xbox. I am not sure if he is using the Xbox with the wireless connection or if he has it connected via his computer. One of my questions is, if I can get the access point set up, would it have any impact on speed for his xbox if he was connecting wirelessly?

This is how I think I should physically set up the access point: Connect the Ethernet from the wall to the SBG6580 into one of the four regular Ethernet ports on the back of the 6580, then connect his computer to one of the other four ethernet ports on the back of the 6580. Right?

Where I get the most confused is configuring the router . However, I can ask all of those questions after I find out if the SBG 6580 will even work since it is a cable modem/router combo. If not, would it be easiest if I purchase a second ASUS RT-N66u or is there another router that is less expensive that would work just as well? Would there be any tradeoffs in speed?

So, my two questions now are 1) can I use the cable modem/router (SBG6580) and 2) will it have any detrimental effect on speed for the xbox if he is using it wirelessly?

If I can use the SBG6580, I will connect it and attempt to configure it - then I will probably have to come back to ask questions. :)

Thank you for your help and your time.
