I would like to start using a VPN service for better privacy while online. However, I have read that using a VPN client will block the local area network, is this true? I use a HTPC with a large RAID array to share media with my other devices and I want to still be able to access my local files via network drives while using VPN to browse the web. Is this possible?
My current setup is the HTPC/file server, xbox360, and a workstation PC connected via ethernet to a dd-wrt router. The dd-wrt router connects via WiFi to a primary router plugged into the modem. The primary router also supplies WiFi to some phones. I have WiFi adapters for the 2 computers if that helps, but I uninstalled them when I couldn't figure out how to get Windows to separate local file sharing over the faster ethernet and internet over WiFi.
I'm pretty inexperienced at networking, but am willing to try anything to make this work. Thanks in advance for your help!
