Network cable unplugged

I just moved into an efficiency apartment with both wireless and a working ethernet port in the wall. The wireless is what I am on now. However, the connection is weak and terribly slow. I would much prefer to set up a lan line. The problem is my computer is not registering that my ethernet cable is plugged in. I had my computer set up in my previous apartment with the same cable and everything worked flawlessly. I've been browsing the forums and trying some of the options I've found. No solution yet. I would appreciate any help offered.
