Can't connect to a non-broadcasting wireless network

I have a laptop with windows 7 (64bit). I've never had any trouble connecting to wireless networks but for some reason I can't connect here.
  • I've added the network on "Manage Wireless Networks" and on the "Set up a connection or Network" on the "Network and Sharing Center".
  • I've tried to connect to "Other Network" and setting the SSID and password.
  • I've also copied the network setting from another laptop able to connect to the network and ran the wizard from a usb pen.
  • I've copied the name and password from a file to make sure I'm not making any typo.
Still it does not connect to it. I get a "Windows was unable to connect to...". troubleshooting resets network adapter but it does nothing.
I'm staying in a friends place for the week, the wireless is shared throughout the house (8 tenants) so I don't have access to the router settings (nor would I want to change them as I'm a guest). People usually have no problem in accessing the network and I was able to add it on my phone.
Would appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this problem.
Thank you in advance
