Understanding PPoE networking

$

I have a new DSL Internet service provider. They use PPoE which requires a user ID and password. I want to add ethernet switch after the DSL PPoE router. Does this require a unique ethernet switch? Does the switch need a user ID and password? If I add a network printer after the switch will I have to enter a user ID and password on the printer for network access?
Apologizing in advance, these are simple networking questions but I've never had to deal with PPoE. Thank you for your help!

DNS server not responding. I've tried everything!

I've been having this problem for about a week now, and I've seriously tried everything. I recently moved into a new apartment with wifi already set up. When I connected to the modem via router cable, I was able to connect just fine. I have full connectivity but when I search on Chrome, IE, or Firefox, my computer says dns_probe_finished_no_internet. I don't think it's the router because my roommates computers connect without a problem and my ipod will connect. My dad's computer will connect, but sometimes it will drop the connection and have the same error. Although when I refresh it it goes back to normal. My laptop has not once connected.

I've tried turning my firewall off, flushing my dns, changing my dns server on ipv4, ipconfig, turning the router off for a while, allowing chrome to access my network and entering the network information in from scratch. Nothing is fixing it!!
Spotify will let me listen to music and that uses internet access.

I tried connecting in safe mode and it lets me browse that way. I hear that means a third party is interfering. It could be my antivirus protection, but I don't want to uninstall it in case I lose my subscription.

I start classes in a week and I really need my laptop to be properly functioning.
PLEASE HELP!

Jadoo TV 3 not getting connected on Telmex fibre modem ( ALU)

Hi,

I am in mexico and was using Jadoo tv 3 box since past one year on telmex connection.
Recently i changed apartment and now i have a telmex connection again but with a fibre modem.

My Jadoo box is not getting connected to internet, it goes to step 3 of getting the IP addresses but fails on step 4. It still continues to work(sometimes), but whenver i will try to stream something it will take a hell lot of time to load, once it starts streaming there in no issue.

I tried to take that box and test it in one of my friend´s place but it works fine there.

I have tried all settings on modem ( mac filters off etc ) as advised by Jaddo support.

Any help is appreciated.

i recently bought a new router(linksys e1200v2) and finished setting up everything. with the wired connection on my laptop im getting 100 mbs after connected to the router my internet speed then became 54 mbs but my desktop and phone are getting are getting just around the 100 mark. the only way i get 100 mbs on my laptop is if i plug the ethernet cable from my router directly to laptop.
i dont know if this could have anything to do with it but my previous router had the exact wifi name and password as this new network and i had my laptop running on a static ip(its not staric on this one) also when i had the older router at the time i had a 54mb connection but now its 100mbs
i've tried forgetting network and joining back, disabling wifi adapter and enabling again, reinstall drivers and restart
any help would be appreciated thank you

combining Wi-Fi and hard wired routers

I currently have a hard wired router with my ATT DSL service. This allows me to access the internet on my PC, AND allows me to connect my TIVO to the web for updates. The router has one Ethernet port. When I want to access the web online on my PC I plug in the Ethernet cable that is connected to my PC. When I want to run a TiVo update I disconnect the Ethernet cable connected to my PC and connect the one from my TIVO.

What I would like to do is add a Wi-Fi router, but also keep and use the hard wire router for my TIVO updates. . The TIVO Wi-Fi adapter runs something like $95 which is out of my price range, thus the need to maintain a hard wire router.

The main reason for wanting Wi-Fi service is that I found that web access on my smart phone is WAY faster using Wi-Fi than the standard Verizon data plan that I currently have. There is no way to connect a Wi-Fi router to the hard wired router I have now. I'm assuming if I did add a Wi-Fi router I would also use that for PC web access, but that's not an absolute necessity since I can always access web with the hard wired router.

1) Is it possible to toggle use in between the two different types of routers? The idea is I would just take my phone line and plug it into which ever router I need to use. But would unplugging the phone line to switch between routers cause problems with the Wi-Fi router? When I've unplugged the phone line from the hard wire router I currently have, it hasn't caused any problems.

2) If it is possible to toggle use in between the two different routers, what reasonably priced router would do the job (as in not over $50) The Wi-Fi routers available from ATT run about $100.

Any info/clarity would be greatly appreciated.

Ping times -- is high latency but no jitter better than low latency with high jitter?

$

I have a question about ping times, latency, and jitter.

I believe I understand the concept of jitter. If I ping www.google.com, and get some results of 10ms and others of 100ms, my jitter is 90ms; right?

If that's true, here's the question I have:

Is it ever preferable to have a connection with higher latency but less jitter? For instance, would it ever be better to have a 100ms latency with zero jitter than it would be to have latency that fluctuates from 10ms to 100ms?

One possible application I could think of would be something like VoIP or videoconferencing, where (perhaps) you would prefer consistency, even if it means higher overall ping times.

Solved: LAN is connected but can't connect to internet?!

I know you all must get this question a lot and I appreciate any help you can give. I recently set up a new old desktop computer I found and I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet. It uses Windows XP, and is a wired connection using an ethernet cable. The wired connection works with my laptop as does the wireless connection (there is no wireless card in the desktop) so I can't figure out what the problem is. The modem is connected through a router, and I have tried hooking it up directly to the computer but its the same thing. It detects the connection and says its connected but no internet access.

Chrome is saying the the DNS lookup failed and I tried all the things it recommended with no luck. I used the ipconfig and everything looked fine but I tried to ping the default gateway and it timed out.

Can anyone tell me what I should try next?

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

WRT1900AC SSH password

Hello,

So, I just tried to SSH into my WRT1900AC to see if my new router supports SSH. Well, Good news it does. But I can't seem to figure out the default password or with that... the username. I had the username as admin, but no luck logging in using Linksys' default passwords (admin, password).

Does anyone know this info and or where to find it? I tried looking in the manual, no luck.

Thanks,
Throdne

Hi,

I'm from India and I'm having a serious problem with my Wifi Router. I'm using Asus RT-10N+ wireless router for last 8 months it use to run smooth but since last week it has started troubling me. I was experiencing momentary disconnection where I got no Internet Connection but since yesterday the router works fine. Whenever I ping I'm getting reply my ISP's login page is also opening and it shows Connected to the Internet but I'm unable to access any website from my browser's.

I've checked the Wifi config all the settings are fine. Now just to be sure I connected the main LAN cable to my CPU and manually inserted the IP, Gateway, DNS, etc into the network connection properties and now the internet seems to operate fine. I can open all websites but whenever I'm plugging the LAN cable into the Router and establishing the connection everything seems normal but I can't seem to access any website.:confused:

Please give me a solution.

Sudden and Random WiFi Disconnections

Hello,

I've been having some long-term problems with my WiFi since I upgraded to Windows 8. I feel like I've looked everywhere, and I've ended up here. In short, my computer will disconnect from WiFi seemingly randomly. Some days are fine, some days are nearly impossible. My quick fix, usually, is to restart my computer a couple times and that usually quick-fixes it. Granted, I don't know that Windows 8 is what caused this, as I've also had to do a couple factory resets. Here is the TSG SysInfo Log:

Ethernet Problem!

My internet suddenly stopped working a few days ago!

The ethernet cable is directly connected to my laptop but since a few days ago, it would show as "cable unplugged", and after 15 to 20 minutes, "unidentified/limited" connectivity would appear. I have a static I.P. configuration, and the internet works fine on my friends' laptops with my configuration. My wifi also works fine.

There seems to be no problem with the driver as far as I can tell, and initially I thought that there might have been some problem with the socket on my laptop, but when I connect an old modem (possibly not working anymore or I don't know how to configure it) to my laptop just to check whether the socket is bad or not, it instantly shows "unidentified network" (without internet just to check the socket), so I guess there isn't any problem with the socket.

I am using Win 8.1 and some people have told me that Win 8.1 is rife with technical issues. I don't know...anyway, please help. :'( :( :'(

Link Aggregation in Mountian Lion 10.8.5

Hi
I hope someone has had this issue before and has a solution
I'm running a Mac Pro 12core on Mountain Lion 10.8.5, not server because of specific software that will not run on server software, and am trying to get the link aggregation to work using 10Ge fibre. I have 2 x 4 Port ATTO NS14 cards in the main machine and 1 port ATTO NS11 cards in all the other machines. Both sets of cards support link aggregation. All the fibre connect and the activity lights are showing green on all the ports. The problem comes when I create the link aggregation bond in the network preferences. 1 of the machines shows connected, but the rest report a "Wrong Group" error. I have setup all the cards the same and have created the link aggregate on all the machines. All the mtu on the cards are set to Jumbo Packets at 9000. Does anyone have an idea as to how I can change the link aggregate group manually? Or maybe another solution.

Cannot detect wireless networks

Hi
I have been having some troubles with my Toshiba laptop. I have a Atheros AR5007EG wireless network adapter. Initially it started with BSOD issues. So I tried to delete and reinstall the driver for Atheros card. Now I am able to start up and connect to Internet with Ethernet cable without any BSOD issues, but I am not able to see any Ethernet connections. When I check in the Device driver, it says the Atheros card is functioning correctly. I tried to delete and let Windows reinstall drivers a couple of times, but no luck.

I have attached screen shot of the Atheros driver in device manager and the output of ipconfig /all. I would appreciate if anybody can help. My model number is L305 - S5894.

Thanks

Ethernet ports in rooms not working

Hi, we've just moved into an apartment and have realized the two ethernet ports in each of our bedrooms aren't working. We contacted our real estate agency, who first told us to "buy a new one", but after some further explanation told us they would get back to us tomorrow on whether it is our problem or theirs. So, in the meantime, I was hoping you guys could offer any help or explanations or things to explore so that we can fix it on our own.

I looked around the internet and found that there is usually a central hub where these wires come together behind a panel somewhere. I've checked all the bedroom closets but didn't see anything. There is another closet with the hot water heater and something else but I didn't see any wall panels. There is another large panel in the wall by the laundry room with the air filter, and above that are a few electric charts and labels that cover something but it says it is dangerous to remove with the power on. There is another closet on our balcony with a cable box inside, but it is locked with a termination lock.

We have cable internet though Northland if that matters.

USB wifi issue

So for a while i've been using a PCI 802.11g wifi card. Then this morning when my hdd drive failed, i decided to also upgrade my wifi to a USB TP Link 300mbs usb wifi stick. Windows installed fine and I installed all relevant drivers. Initially I had put the the wifi into a usb 2.0 port. It connected fine and ran brilliantly (downloading 6mb/s) for about 5 minutes before then saying it had limited connectivity, trouble shooter said default gateway not found and fixed it. Only for it to repeatedly have the same error, working for a little while, then back to limited connectivity.
I tried re-installing the driver, setting a manual IP, restarting the router and installing windows updates. None of them have worked. It also works perfectly fine with an ethernet cable although I am unable to run a cable to where the pc is normally.

On the off chance, I decided to try putting it into a USB 3.0 slot. Lo and behold, the connection is fine! Or at least, it appears to be. Whilst it does not lose connection, it is only working at a throttled pace (less than 1mb/s normally but peaked at 1.8mb/s). My mouse and keyboard both work fine in the usb 3.0 slots (i have nothing else to test with it) and all drivers are up to date.

Does anyone know how to fix either issue?

Hey everyone, sorry if this is in wrong area.

So today I bought a secondhand computer. It's a Toshiba Satelite L875D-S7230.

When I connect it to my home wifi it connects no problem and says 'internet access' when I hover over the icon. However when I open open google chrome or internet explorer and type in a site, it takes a little while then says this page cannot be displayed or this web page is unavailable.

The guy I bought it from says he had no issues. And I know it's not the internet because I'm using the internet to post this from phone.
I've tried a few ideas that worked for other people on other forums like using cmd box but to no avail.

Has anyone got any idea why the computer is being such a turd?? Can anyway give advice on how to fix the problem? Thank you all so much!

hi friend help me
