Hello everyone! I just started a lease at a new house yesterday and this is my first time setting up cable/internet. According to my lease, my landlord technically holds the account, I just have to provide my own modem. Not sure if that is relevant, but there's some backstory anyway. I chose a Netgear C3700 Cable Modem Router and after 6 hours and many calls to customer support for both Netgear and Mediacom (my ISP) I am starting to feel hopeless.
So basically, here's what happens. I plug my modem router into the wall, and I connect my laptop (Macbook Pro) with an ethernet cord. After waiting a bit for the connection, I am able to browse the internet on this wired connection. However, I am no longer able to access my router's administration page, and it says my laptop's IP address is 173 something something. Additionally, if I try to connect another device (I've tried my phone and another laptop, both wired and wireless), it says it's connected to the router but is unable to access the internet.
I've tried messing with the modem router while it's offline (i.e. unplugged the coaxial cable) and everything works perfectly. I can connect multiple devices and remain able to access the router's administrative page. I have tried resetting the modem router to factory settings multiple times.
As I've said, I've spent a lot of time with customer support for both the modem router and the ISP, but I'm just really not sure where the problem is. Since I am able to browse the internet I feel like it's not the ISP, but since everything seems to work fine with the router offline it seems like the router is also working fine!
If anyone needs more info or screenshots please feel free to ask, I am getting really stressed over this. Additionally, even if you don't know a solution, but can give me suggestions of what questions to ask and who to ask them to, I would feel a lot better about the whole situation. Thanks!
