I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum, but I didn't know where else to put it. I play World of Warcraft, and as some of you may know, it is common for some players to subscribe to illegal programs which will target an individual's internet connection by obtaining their IP address (usually through Skype) and disconnecting them.
Another player has a personal vendetta against me, and he messaged me in skype telling me it was "ddos time." I didn't really believe him, but I immediately removed him from contacts and blocked him. Shortly after, everything in game slowly came to a halt with everyone running in place. I completely disconnected from the internet. It took a while for me to be able to reconnect, but eventually, I was able to log back on.
However, when I logged back into Skype, the same thing happened again. I was upset, but I thought it would blow over, so I just logged off for the night, being sure to unplug my modem in an attempt to get a new IP address in the morning.
The next day, the attack happened again, so I called my ISP and explained the situation, asking if I could be assigned a new IP address. They didn't seem to know what "ddos" was or really understand what I was talking about, and finally just told me to get a better firewall like Norton and email them a harassment report if it happened again.
So basically, what I want to know is this:
1) Is there any way for me to obtain a new IP address if my ISP won't issue me a new one? I've already tried all of the methods you can find by googling "how to obtain a new IP address" and none of them have worked.
2) If I were to do as my ISP suggested and email them a harassment report, is there any way to get a log of some sorts, of what is going on, where the attack is coming from? Would it lead them directly to my attacker, or only to the illegal program he is using?
3) Again, as my ISP suggested, would purchasing Norton firewall help protect against this attack? I am currently using Windows Firewall.
4) Is there anything at all I can do? Any other options? I have seen mentions of proxies or VPNs, but I don't know what either one of those is, really.
5) Other than not using Skype, how can I prevent future attacks?
I would be happy to provide you with any information you need to help me with this problem. It's very distressing to me, because I'm afraid it will happen with non gaming-related things, like when I take timed exams online.
If it helps, I don't have a direct contract with my ISP. I live in an apartment building complex and we pay our apartment manager, who has the contract, and I am just listed as my unit number and was assigned a modem. I think that's why I seem to have a static IP, despite the fact that I am set up to obtain an IP address automatically.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
