Media Disconnected - Cannot Obtain New IP Address

I have an hp laptop that currently runs on Windows 7. Originally, I was attempting to 'change adapter settings' within Network Connections located in the Control Panel. Upon running Network Diagnostics, I received the following error message: "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding." I utilized Google and search results directed me to Microsoft 'Support' with the url http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779064. The 3rd step on the webpage told me to use the Ipconfig command-line tool and input the following commands:

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew
After attempting the 3rd prompt (ipconfig/release), I received another error telling me that "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected." I then proceeded to search Google for the error message and one of the very first result was a thread dated October 19, 2011 for BigResource.com under the Networking tab. The post contained a question very similar in nature to mine and was responded to by "TechGuy." Unfortunately, the thread expired.

The computer with which I'm experiencing difficulty acquiring Internet access (it does, however, show a connection to my wifi network) was given to me by a family member. The other, which I am currently using to post this question, has no issues with accessibility. Please help; thanks!
