Internet Access Problems

My mother is having internet access problems and she called me in to help. But this problem seems to be way over my head or so simple that I can't figure it out. Here goes...

She has Comcast internet. She had a desktop computer that she used the internet with for years and recently got a new laptop. She wanted to connect wirelessly to her Comcast internet on her laptop but couldn't. After about three hours on live chat with Comcast I finally discovered that she doesn't have a wireless router. She has a box that looks like a wireless router but I've never really looked too closely at it. She gave me the numbers off the box and after checking it was discovered that her equipment is way out of date and she needs a wireless router. Comcast will provide one for free but says it will be 4-6 weeks for the thing to ship. In the meantime, she was going to use her internet the same way that she always has with an Ethernet cord. She plugged in the cord to her laptop, went to Control Panel to sign on to a broadband connection and was prompted for an ISP username and password. She has no idea what the username and password are. After another couple of hours with Comcast she was told to use the SSID and Network Key on the router that she has. Come to find out, there is no SSID or Network Key on the router - or whatever the pretty little box that sits beside her computer with flashing lights that is incapable of producing wireless internet is. So, can someone please tell me what to do next?

I really appreciate the help. And be gentle if this is a stupid question with an unbelievably simple answer :o
