Network cables in the early years of networking

There's something I've started thinking about. At the time networking was getting off the ground, RJ-45 and Coax was competing to be the better network infrastructure. Obviously, RJ-45 came out on top. But, it occurred to me. If the top data transmitting cables were competing, then why wasn't RJ-11 in the running? It's not that bad of a connection and it's also used for DSL. Plus, phone lines have been out longer than either of the other two.
