Currently I have a cable modem and a wireless router (separate instruments) located next to each other on the basement level of my 3 level home. I want to relocate the router to the second (middle) level to provide better wireless reception throughout the house.
My problem is I would still need at least two lan ports on the basement level. Can I put a 4port switch between the modem and the relocated router and use 3 of the ports to: a) connect the router on level two, b) connect the PC located in the basement, and c) connect the module in my alarm box that sends texts to my cell?
Basically I would be putting two connections behind the router and all other wired and wireless connections after the router.
I can accomplish this set-up without having to get the cable company to relocate the single connection for the modem currently terminated in my basement.
