I have a 2-story, ~3000 sq. ft. home with a basement. My router is a very basic D-Link DIR 601 (150N) and it's in my basement office. The router's range is not great; there are rooms on the 2nd floor where the signal is only 2 out of 5 bars, so I'm interested in getting a router with better range characteristics. I don't mind paying whatever it takes to get the range, but want to spend only what's necessary.
The Asus RT-AC66U appears to be the fastest/greatest-range router on the market today, but it's very pricey: $190-200. I can get an N900 router for about $50 less. Not knowing much about routers, is the Asus RT-AC66U overkill for a 2-story house. IOW, would a N900 or even N600 router provide the same range inside my house as the RT-AC66U?
