can't connect to any internet...network unknown please help

Hi
I have an Acer Aspire 5738 about 4 days ago for no apparent reason i lost ability to connect to internet. I have tried via wifi/personal hotspot/ethernet lead ... At the bottom of the screen where it shows the internet usage (looks like a graph) has been greyed out and there is a yellow star in the middle. When i open network and sharing centre normally the name of my laptop is at the top of the page where it says view your basic network information...now it says "unknown". I've tried everything inluding using another laptop to download adapter drivers...these have been updated...also when my list of wifi options shows when i try to connect i it says limited connetion available. i've tried setting up new connection but nothing...please help im lost without my laptop :( it must be something simple as i've not done anything to my laptop..it just seemed to happen overnight
