Hi Folks,
I'm a little stuck on a network performance issue and was wondering if anyone out there could assist, please?
I'm connected at home to the internet via a cable router (VirginMedia). To get fast speeds between a NAS box connected to the router and my desktop machine upstairs, I've run a Cat 5e cable between the rooms. I get near gigabit speeds between the NAS and the desktop machine with this setup.
The location of the router in the house isn't ideal for wifi, so I decided to connect another cable router (Belkin N1) in access point mode, using the cable I had previously connected between the VirginMedia router and the desktop. The wifi connections to the access point work great, but my desktop machine, now connected to the access point via an additional short cat 5e cable, sees a tenfold decrease in network speed when connecting to the NAS.
Is there something I'm missing here? I don't understand the reason for the tenfold decrease. Both routers have gigabit ethernet ports. Should just routing through the access point have such a detremental impact on network speed?
Thanks,
Pete
