Since knowing "why" can be helpful (or people want to know regardless), I have a secondary TP Link MR3040 router running OpenWRT. I want to use it to run DSLR Dashboard - this is not the problem. I would like to run updates on the router occasionally, this is a problem. Even though devices that connect to the router can get online, the router itself cannot (to get package updates.)
Problems:
The secondary router cannot access the internet to receive updates.
I also cannot access the secondary router from my PC.
Here's the layout:
Main router (192.168.1.1) ASUS RT-N56U
Secondary router (192.168.1.2) connected to main router via LAN to LAN. (The TP Link only has 1 LAN port.)
PC (static IP 192.168.1.4)
Here is netstat -rn and ifconfig from the TP router (secondary)

TP Link does show up in the Asus router as a wired client with the IP 192.168.1.2, and the iPad that is connected to the TP link router can get online, but package updates on the TP router fail. The iPad also shows up as a wired device in the ASUS router interface, so it is connected to the wired port of the ASUS router via the TP link wired port.
However, I cannot access the TP router (static ip of 192.168.1.2) from my PC (static ip of 192.168.1.4). I can access the Asus router (192.168.1.1.)
So again, my two problems:
The secondary router cannot access the internet to receive updates.
I also cannot access the secondary router from my PC.
