DNS, CDN, & DDoS

I'm a new user and this is my first post, so hopefully I'm providing enough details and abiding by your rules.

I'm attempting to better understand how managed DNS, CDN, and DDoS all come into play together. In addition I'm trying to differentiate good DNS providers from bad DNS providers, or good to better. What is the major differences from the top services, Contendo Advanced, Dyn Enterprise, AWS Route 53, etc.? Do most look for simplicity in the consolidation of services, advanced offerings, reliability, or protection, i.e. what are the most important factors to look for? It seems like there would be some disruption to websites if someone would choose to switch, yet I see a trend of many doing just that - especially moving towards the AWS suite (could that be because of POPs and pricing?).

Moving forward a little bit, is most DDoS attack prevention a byproduct of DNS by way of a strong infrastructure and a secure network that is hardened and distributed? If this is true, is the byproduct of a strong managed DNS provider enough or is a separate DDoS specific mitigation service necessary to prevent a successful attack? Is purchasing DDoS specific services the last step, and is DNS and CDN more important in running a strong website. Again, what factors come into play?

My apologies for the amount of questions, but I want to be clear with my thought process so you can better understand what it is that I'm asking. I'm by no means a tech expert as you can most likely tell, so please if my questions make you believe that I have a fundamental misunderstanding, let me know and correct my thinking!

I appreciate all your help and I am looking forward to hearing your guys/girls thoughts on the matter!
