My network sees phones as well

My network see both computers, printer and both medias. It also sees my cell phone and somebody else's cell phone. When I click on the latter I get only the general specs of the cell phone. My network is private (homegroup),
How come my network sees the other cell phones? Can the owner of the other phone get into my files?
I have Windows 8.1 on my computer.
