I just started a new gig as the I/T Lead for a local A/V business. I was told they had a couple computers (less than 10), and some wireless stuff.
I'm in the process of inventorying everything from the fiber internet modem through to the network printers and everything in between, and so far have identified 50 devices accessing their network. I have an agreeable owner who is giving me and my expertise a lot of latitude to do what I want, as long as it's gonna make the network function better.
I see 3 main points to address:
- business operations needs (data, wired)
- business operations needs (data, Wifi)
- A/V equipment (mix of wired and Wifi)
Upgrades to network switches are going to happen shortly, but I'm wondering if there are any best practices for making the A/V requirements and the Business data requirements operate on the same physical network without the A/V stuff hampering the operational stuff. I have already proposed a separate Wifi network for A/V only - to take the bottle net off the wireless equipment (which needs upgrading) that is used for business purposes. I'm not convinced though that sharing the same 192.168.3.xxx is the right way to go, even though it might be easiest. A second router into the ISP's router (which isn't DHCP server yet, but will be shortly).
The fibre router we have from our ISP is a Zhone 2426, which does our phones also. I have a funny feeling they will not give me access to the admin functions on the router, at lease thats the indication I got from someone there yesterday.
Anyways, there's a lot here to digest, and I'm only in to day 2. Just thought I'd throw this out there for comments.
