Internet works but browsers don't

I have (my friend's) an Acer Aspire 4339-2618 Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). The problem is that neither the wifi nor Ethernet connections seem to work. I can successfully ping www.google.com and 8.8.8.8, but when I try to connect to the Internet a browser (IE and Chrome) message says "unable to connect to the Internet". I downloaded the Atheros AR5B95 driver to a flash drive and then installed it on the computer thinking that maybe this would help, but it didn't.

I ran Malwarebytes and removed over a hundred malicious items and over 700 non-malicious items, but the problem persists. I removed any McAfee and Norton software using removal tools and the only difference is that Chrome now has the Google search open, but I can't get anywhere else on the Internet. When I first started working with the laptop I was getting two error messages: one said "DMREngine has stopped working" and the other said, "SOS messaging has stopped working". After running Malwarebytes and JunkRemoval tool, I no longer get these messages when the computer boots and loads.

I did a CHKDSK repair and SFC /scannow thinking that may help, but it didn't.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.
