Hello. I'm a new comer to these forums with hopes of possibly getting answers or advice for my problem. :)
My problem? High ping times during most of the day with my DSL. My ISP? ATT - 6.0 Mbps Plan. In case any readers of this post are wondering, yes I have contacted ATT Tech support. They were less than helpful. They did send some dude to my house to watch me do a speed test, but unfortunately it was at an early morning time so my pings were good.
It really pissed me off that I finally got a tech guy to come over and the problem just decided to hide itself. :/

Note that this isn't a fact of what the problem is. It is just my suspicion.

The problems symptoms:
- Massive ping times during most day time hours of the day; usually a constant 500~700ms. As I said I play online games a lot and with these pings it's really unplayable.
- Notice above where I put "day time" in bold? Well, here's an interesting tidbit of information: During night time (after 12AM) my ping usually goes down to acceptable levels; 80ms or less.
What all I have done to "debug" the problem:
- Changed ALL in house wiring.
- Wired phone line directly to the d-mark (NID)
- Unplugged Ethernet cable on my PC and had an ATT service representative ping my modem (he got high ping times). Reason for doing this was to weed out the problem being potentially a virus or software overusing bandwidth on my end.
Suspicion of what the problem is:
Note that this isn't a fact of what the problem is. It is just my suspicion.
- Right. Remember earlier when I said my ping times were high during day time but low at night? That at least to me implies lots of people are awake and online during "peak hours" and are using up more bandwidth than ATT's local servers can deal with. How else would you explain poor internet during day, but good at night?
Misc. Information:
- OS: Windows 7, Ultimate
- RAM: 8GB
- CPU: 3.4GHZ Dual Core Intel.
