I moved to my own apartment three months ago with the grand plan of not having internet access there so that when I was home, laptop or no, I would not be online. I'm a single guy and between boredom and girls there are plenty of justifications for wasting time online. In the city apartment I moved into, though, I have access to unsecured, anonymous wireless networks.
I'd like to permanently disable my laptop's wireless adapter so that I can't access any networks in my apartment. I want to be able to access wifi at work, however. To do it I bought a usb wifi adapter that I could leave there. The problem I'm having is that it's not as easy as I thought it would be to permanently uninstall the laptop's native wireless driver.
I've uninstalled the adapter's driver using the Device Manager, but after I do the WLAN Autoconfig service kicks in and reinstalls it. I've also disabled the WLAN Autoconfig (Computer Management > Services > WLAN Autoconfig Properties > startup: disabled), but that's an easy thing to re-enable.
I'm an administrator of the computer but assume I have no self control, here :). How would you disable your laptop's wifi so that your access to the internet was dependent on your access to a usb wifi adapter?
Thank you. I just discovered this site today. It's a great resource.
my computer:
Acer Aspire series 5740/5340
Model: MS 2286
Windows 7
Wireless adapter: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000
Wireless driver: Atheros AR5B93
