Laptop won't connect wirelessly to *most* routers

I've been having issues with my Windows 8.1 laptop's wi-fi for a while now. It used to work perfectly fine and then started acting up. Basically I could see all the available access points but was not able to connect to any of them (home routers, iphone hotspot etc.). I was only able to connect via ethernet. I recently moved into a new house for uni and got Virgin wi-fi installed and suddenly my laptop could connect wirelessly no problem!

I assumed the problem had somehow been fixed but I recently took my laptop into uni and wasn't able to connect there and was still unable to connect to my phone's hotspot. I'm thinking that my laptop is able to connect to 5Ghz frequencies but not 2.4Ghz. Does anyone know why this might be and how to fix it?

Solutions I've tried:
  • Updated network drivers
  • Replaced the wireless adapter itself
  • Re-installed Windows 8.1 completely
  • Fully updated Windows
