Solved: Did installing virtual machine disable downloads

Hi. I recently set up a virtual machine of Ubuntu on my Windows Vista PC. Just days afterwards, regular downloads stopped working with multiple browsers in the regular Windows environment. I would see the download progress and the file size shown, but then I would not see the downloaded file where I downloaded it to. I also tried running the file instead of saving it, and it could not be run. I am wondering if using the virtual machine in VMWare Player and using the copy file from VM to Windows desktop function could have messed it up, since I seemed to have the VM for a few days before things got messed up. Web pages still load in Windows just fine, but not downloads. Regular things like file copying from folder to folder still work. It could also be from malware, specifically, a rootkit and another infected file called "ebayshortcuts.exe" that Avast found. The rootkit was found in a file called dfsc.sys, which I assume stands for "distributed file system client." I deleted both files through Avast's startup scan, but files are still not downloading correctly. Thanks for your advice.
