can't connect to broadband

I have recently moved home and started a broadband account with Telstra(Adsl2plus). I purchased an N300 netgear modem and set it up.
When the startup wizard/netgear genie comes up it says there is a connection, but when I put in the password and username , the dsl and internet lights go out and it cannot connect.
The dsl and internet lights seem to slowly come back on and drop out randomly indicating some kind of weak connection. I have spent over 3 hours on the phone to Telstra, who claim there is nothing wrong on their end of the line. I have spent over an hour on the phone to netgear, and can confirm my modem is set up correctly. I have also had a Telstra technician here to check the phone line in the wall which he claims is fine and he thinks my modem is to fault but my modem is brand new and I lent it to a friend for a week and he had no trouble with it whatsoever.
please, I cannot figure out where the problem is, neither can anyone else.
