Getting WiFi throughout a house with very dense walls

The current wireless box is in the first floor of a three-story house. The walls and floors are so dense the signal is 50% ten feet directly above on the second floor and zero when you move twenty feet away on that second floor and of course zero on all of the third floor. I have suggested running wires and putting a wireless router on each floor; but, they don't want any "ugly wires" outside the house and don't want to bore holes in the floors.

Signal boosters/relays aren't doing it, either.

I saw a device a few days back that supposedly transmits a signal through the house wiring. You are supposed to place one of the devices in a plug near the router, plug a CAT5 between the device and the router. The match to the pair is then plugged into an outlet in a remote place in the house and a CAT5 connected between it and another computer or secondary router.

Ho well do these things work?
