I have a long-standing issue with wireless connection to broadband and I'm at a loss as to what to do about it. I don't know much about networks so please be patient with me.
We have several devices that are capable of connection to the broadband service. There are 2 computers in the house - my Win 7 Desktop (built myself so not shop bought/branded) and my wife's Win 8 Samsung laptop. She has a Samsung S3 and I have a Song Xperia Z. There is also a Kindle Fire, and 2 Asus tablets.
We had Sky Broadband (I'm in the UK) for about a year. As my desktop was the only thing with a wired connection, it was solid, connection wise. All the tablets connected to the wifi without any problems, as was the same with the Xperia. She would occasionally have problems with her S3 wifi reception. My wife's laptop, however, has had constant connection losses. There are times that the thing has to be closed over and left for several minutes before it'll recognise the connection again. She can have 20 or 30 timeouts or disconnects a night. We tried moving the router to different places in the hopes reception would change but it never did, so we put it down to her laptop.
A year later. We have changed provider and have a different router. All connections and devices are still the same. The ones that worked on the previous router still work. The ones that were terrible on the previous router are still terrible.
I decided to get a wireless USB connection for the Desktop and move the router to another room. Suddenly my Desktop suffered the same crippling issues as the laptop, with about 20 dropouts in and hour. The laptop didn't get any better either, even though the router was literally 4ft away!!! I have since moved the router back and re-established my wired connection.
Can anyone explain what could be the problem, or any way of fixing it? Short of actually setting up static 'wired' areas around the house, I don't know what else to do.
