VPN changes IP address for VPN

Hey guys
I am new here
I have built a network with 10 users using Server Essentials 2012. Network is up and running but there are a few nagging issues but we will tackle them one at a time.
VPN has been set up and wouldn't work until I learned the problem
users can log in to the VPN without issue but can't access the server or anything at all on the network using their normal settings
I learned the other day that when a VPN client connects from off site the server changes it's IP address from dot 101 to dot 42.
so i have created some desktop shortcuts pointing to this new ip address so users can access their folders but it is ugly and a pain in the rear
does anyone have any ideas why this would be the case?
server is 2012 essentials
PDC
FILE AND PRINT SERVER
DNS
DHCP
etc. etc. it's a single server network
does anyone have any ideas?
cheers
