Problem: Windows XP system displays "media disconnected" message when ipconfig is executed. Wireless unable to see networks in the area. The solution only applies (and the problem probably only appears) on systems with Intel networking hardware.

Out of gratitude for this forum helping me fix this problem, I thought it would be appropriate to add a bit more detail.

This is being written in June 2013, and the referenced thread was 2011, so the problem still happens after 2 years.

The solution is simply to download and install Intel Wireless ProSet software from the Intel web site. In my case, merely installing the software was sufficient to fix the problem. I didn't even have to reboot. I got a "networks available" message as the installation finished up. (The previous thread indicated that doing a reset with that software was necessary.)

I also want to point out that the Intel web site has a lot of different versions of Wireless ProSet. It may be necessary for you to run an assaying tool, such as Belarc Advisor, to determine which model networking hardware is on your system before doing the download.

Thanks to this forum for pointing me in the right direction!
