I have an old Linksys WRT54G v3.1 router and I would like to use it as a repeater. What I would like to do is run CAT6 cable either under the house or through the attic (125 ft should do it) from one of the ports on the AT&T "2WIRE" modem/router combination (which is how I get my data) unit to the Linksys unit. I'm OK with running open source firmware (DD-WRT, for example) on the Linksys router. Is it possible to do this in such a way that I could walk from one end of my house to the other with a laptop, and have the wireless connection switch from one wireless source to the other without my having to intervene? (This is actually for my mother, which is why that last bit would be nice.)
If the answer to this question is "yes," then I would also appreciate a link to a how-to about this. It's not clear to me whether a second computer at the "Lynksys" end of this setup is required to do this, and I would like to avoid that. I just want to be able to walk through the house and have good wi-fi everywhere because I would have a functional wi-fi router on both ends. My cell phone signal is all but nonexistent on the same side of the house where there's no wi-fi, and so my mobile data speeds collapse on that side of the house, too. She does currently have a powerline set up, but, with only one port and no wi-fi, it doesn't serve her needs on that side of the house, which are: Roku/Netflix, a Chromebook, and (eventually) an "Cloud Printer," which has no provision for an Ethernet connection. Plus, again, the wi-fi on her phone.
Thanks in advance for your help, and best,
Scott
