As the title says, this is my first experience with a wireless router (Belkin N-450 DB), made necessary when I received as a gift a Kindle Fire HD 7. The setup went ok, though I had quite a time with the router being able to see the computer but not the internet; kept telling me to restart the modem, over and over. Several of these restarts ended with the router being online, but then the signal would drop and I'd get the "restart the modem" message again. In the end, it came online and stayed there, and it's been almost 48 hours with no hint of trouble, so I'm thinking it was a coincidence, i.e., just when I was trying to set up my router the cable service started acting up. Anyway, no big deal; I got it working, and duly registered my Kindle Fire and also tied my old Kindle E-reader (which I'd registered last year using the free wi-fi at McDonald's!) to the router's network; the wi-fi worked just fine on it, too. I started exploring the Fire HD, and discovered it has Skype pre-loaded as one of the Apps. I'm a regular user of Skype on my desktop, so naturally I made a few calls with the Fire HD version (worked fine). Which leads me (finally) to my question, which concerns just how wi-fi works: When I shut everything down for the night, I also turned off the Kindle Fire HD using the switch; didn't just let it go into sleep mode. The modem is never off, but the "PC activity" LED always turns off when the desktop shuts down. (Modem is a Motorola SB 5101, belongs to Charter Cable). Now that I have a router installed, I've been told that it's customary to just leave it on, too, so I do; that probably accounts for the activity light flickering on the modem just like it does when the desktop is up & running. So I understand the cable signal (i.e., the Internet) is always present since the modem is always on, and the router is apparently picking up that signal and is broadcasting it wirelessly. What I want to know is, how did the Kindle Fire HD turn itself on this morning (I hadn't touched it since turning it off at the switch the night before)? I was having my first cup of coffee out in the kitchen and started hearing the distinctive tune Skype makes when a video call is coming in. I went back to the den and sure enough it was the tablet, still closed up in its leather case, but turned on and a Skype video call from my brother ready to answer, which I did. Is the tablet's wi-fi somehow still in a receiving mode, even though the tablet is turned off at the switch?
