Getting ready to install new router firmware, can not telet my wrt160n v3

Hey, I'm getting ready to install DDWRT on my Linksys WRT160n V3. I've been reading up on "how to" for weeks.. literally several weeks.. In preparation to flash my device, I felt the need to telnet my router to make sure that I could, before I've reached the point of no return.. as my router does not have any firmware available for download on it's manufacturer's site.

When I use XP's telnet to telnet to 192.168.1.1, (yes, I enabled the service and set the firewall to allow it,) it only gives me the response:

Code:

Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connection failed
So, I downloaded putty. When I try to do the same thing in putty, I get this error:

Code:

Network error: Connection refused
I'd like to get this sorted out and find out exactly how to telnet my router before I jump into upgrading the firmware. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
